Principal Updates for the Week of May 11
Concord, NH – The New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) is holding a public meeting in Rye, NH, at 6:00 p.m. on May 11, to discuss the Department’s investigation into a pediatric cancer cluster in the Seacoast. DHHS officials will present the findings of its investigation into whether any common exposures could have contributed to the cancer cluster.
The public meeting will be held on Thursday, May 11th at 6:00 pm at the Rye Junior High School Gymnasium, 501 Washington Road, Rye, NH 03870.
DHHS initially investigated potential clusters of two pediatric cancers – rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) and pleuropulmonary blastoma (PPB) – in five Seacoast towns. After DHHS released a report on the cancer cluster in February 2016, elected officials and the general public asked for additional investigation on whether any behavioral or environmental exposures were potential causes. The presentation during the public meeting will report out on the findings of this expanded investigation.
DHHS will publish the results of the additional investigation in a new report that will be available on the DHHS website by Friday, May 5. The new report and the initial report, 2016 Investigation of Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) Cases in the Rye Area, will be available at http://www.dhhs.nh.gov/dphs/hsdm/cancer/publications.htm.

- A successful bake sale was held last Friday. Student Council raised over $324.00 with your help. All money is going to the Kids Helping Kids program that provides meals for children in need throughout the summer. (Your Tupperware containers are in the lobby)
- Our Walk for the Lighthouse was a huge success. The students raised over $2000.00 for the event and we had a great time walking. Thank you for your support.
- So many have signed up for the garden this summer and we appreciate that, but we still need a few more volunteers. The garden is just behind the library. We are seeking families to sign up for a week (or share with another family) to water and weed once each day. The perk…harvesting some of the ripe produce and herbs on your days. Yum!

- RES formed a literacy team this year to evaluate our literacy programs. We break literacy into three components: word study, reading, and writing. First up is Word Study. We decided to implement Wilson’s Fundations in grades K-2. Students will receive a systematic program in critical foundational skills, emphasizing phonemic awareness and phonics. Grades 3-5 will begin a new spelling and vocabulary program from Zaner Bloser.
- Next year all teachers in grades 1-5 will be using a co-teaching model for math instruction. Grades 2 &3 currently use this model. Your child will be pre-tested for each unit and placed exactly where they need to be for instruction in that unit. That includes enrichment or interventions. It has been quite successful allowing for small group instruction that meets individual’s needs.
- Notice from the Rye School Board: We know that everyone is pressed for time, but we really need you to take 5 minutes out of your weekend to help us understand what’s working well at RES and what areas might need some attention. Right now we have received surveys for only 51 out of approximately 280 students. With such a small and unrepresentative sample, it is difficult to use the results to inform our goal setting work this summer. Please take a few minutes and share your insights about RES and the education your child (children) is/are receiving. RES survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/WHN5JBQ
- Lost & Found will be donated to a charity soon. Please check the boots, jackets, sweaters, hats, etc. for your possessions.
- Tomorrow is an Early Release Day for students. Students being picked up and students riding bikes will be dismissed at 12:25 and buses at 12:30.
- There is no school on Monday. Enjoy Memorial Day.
- Field day for grades K - 2 is on Wednesday, May 31 from 9:00 - 11:30. If necessary the rain date will be Thursday, June 1 for grades 1 & 2 ONLY and Monday, June 5 for K only. Please send your child with a snack and apply sunscreen and bug spray at home. This year is a circus/carnival theme. If possible have your child wear a solid color t-shirt (the same one that they wore for the three piggy opera would be perfect! We could use a few more volunteers. Thanks to those who have already signed up. Please arrive by 8:45 (this is a change from before). http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0f44aea92fa0f58-field

Each grade will be adopting a family. (Grade 1 is doing something different) You should have heard, or will be hearing from your teacher soon. Ask your child’s teacher how you can help if you have any questions.

- Safety Alert: Students who are biking to school need to stop before crossing on the crosswalk by the school. Several children have been observed just crossing in front of cars without a glance. Please stress with your child the need to stop and look before crossing the street. We have mentioned it to students in our morning announcements, but would love reinforcement at home. Thanks!
- Picture Day was this morning, but if you forgot or your child was absent, you will have another chance this fall. Stay tuned to updates and as soon as a date is set we will pass that on to you.

- Some students are getting to school ten minutes too early. Teachers are not expected to be at school before 8:00 and that means students are left unattended in the lobby. I notice it is mostly children who bike or walk to school. Please make sure your child comes to school no earlier than 8:00 am. Thanks for helping us out.
- Finally, as a school we practice many types of drills. Tomorrow we will practice the Lock Out drill. That means when students are outside (recess) and hear a horn they will go to a faraway portion of a field on school property. Just a heads up in case your child mentions there was a siren while they were playing. It was only a drill.

August 30, 2016:
- First off, WELCOME BACK! It was a very quiet summer without those wonderful voices filling the halls and classrooms. I am so glad they are back. Thanks for making our first few days great.
- Each Thursday you should get a weekly update from my office. I will let you know about upcoming events and have information that is timely.
- There is no school tomorrow or Monday due to the Labor Day weekend.
- Please fill out those packets sent home the first day as soon as possible. Some forms you can just add all the names of your children on to save time.
- Any notes to the office regarding dismissal should have first and last names as well as homeroom teacher. We have many children with the same first name and sometimes it is hard to figure out which child we are talking about. That would really be helpful to Staci and Donna in the office.
- A quick reminder for those who pick up their children at the end of the day: Please do not come into the school unless you need to see the office or the teacher. We prefer to bring your child(ren) to you. We need to account for children at dismissal and sometimes we miss a parent taking their child. Thanks for helping us out.
- For those families that are interested in Student Accident Insurance the forms are available on the following website: www.isi195.com/Products-Services/Student-Accident-Insurance. The cost is $20.00 for school time coverage and $90.00 for 24-hour coverage.
- This year we are requesting that students keep all toys at home. There are times teachers may ask for a student to bring in a stuffed animal or a special toy but we would like to restrict toys to those such times. Teachers are very good at letting you know in advance.
